While progress is slowly being made to create more welcoming and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals, harassment and discrimination are still a reality for many. Older adults have shared stories about desperately seeking and finding LGBTQ+ books and information at their local public library, which helped them to find community and live authentically. Today our local libraries continue to act as safe havens for many LGBTQ+ individuals providing books, resources, internet access and a quiet space away from taunting peers or disapproving parents.
Please join us for a Creating LGBTQ+ Inclusive Libraries SafeZone Training brought to us by the LGBTQ Academy at the Out Alliance. This is a dynamic, interactive session that includes activities and discussion around: inclusive and respectful language, understanding LGBTQ+ identities, the process of coming out, best practice tips for creating inclusive libraries, where to go for resources and much more. At the end of the workshop, participants are offered official Out Alliance SafeZone stickers and an official Out Alliance SafeZone lapel pin so that they can create their own SafeZone.
